Two new classrooms and a courtyard garden were introduced at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve in June 2018. The classrooms were an adaptive reuse of storage sheds that were used for holding equipment needed for Caumsett’s Dairy production. Both projects were funded by Parks & Trails New York and the Caumsett Foundation. The Foundation hired landscape architect Scenic Designs, Inc. to originate and execute the courtyard garden and walkways. The total cost of the project was $125,000.
The new garden is a place for quiet reflection and is used as a gatewayto the new classrooms and public restrooms. A drip sprinkler system was added to keep the plantings at their peak but does not intrude on the visitor’s use by having the spray of water underneath the thick layer of brown mulch which fills the planting beds. The courtyard features stone walkways and ADA compliant access for Park visitors and staff.
